Reprint and Fragrance Education: Scentibility

Scentibility - Business Women's Guide to Fashion

By Chi Chi Okezie

Professional women can impress their clients, customers, colleagues and associates with their charm, intellect and scent. Wearing perfume or fragrance in the workplace is becoming increasing common and can reinforce your image. But, it is important to be sensitive to how you wear your fragrance so that you are not being offensive to those around you. Listed below are tips that professional women can use to promote a healthy sense of aromatherapy in the business arena.

Cologne, Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum

There are usually three forms of fragrances that women can use on their bodies to enhance their natural body scents. Cologne is the least concentrated of the three and therefore the smell is does not last as long. It is typical to re-apply often during the day. Cologne is great if you work in an environment where you are in constant contact with others. The smell is faint and will not disturb others that may have allergies to fragrances. Eau de Toilette is a little more concentrated than cologne and lasts longer through out the day. The smell of the fragrance is more intense so you are instructed to use less of the fragrance on your body. Eau de Parfum is the most concentrated of the three and more expensive. Eau de Parfum has a stronger smell and lasts almost all day where there is no need to re-apply.

Points of Contact

When applying fragrance to the body, it is best to apply to the pressure and heat sensitive points on the body. This will ensure that the fragrance will last longer and will send out a soft and natural like scent that is not over powering or distracting to others. Points of contact include the back of the neck, behind the ear lobes, in the chest/cleavage area, the wrists and behind the knees. Only one or two squirts are necessary for each section of contact. When spraying the fragrance, make sure that the spray is a few inches away from the body. Another good idea is to spray the fragrance into the air and walk into it.

Layering Effect

The best time to apply fragrance is after you finish showering. The scent tends to last longer and it would reduce the amount of times that you re-apply the fragrance during the day. A soft and subtle way to apply fragrance can be by layers. For example, if your favorite scent has a soap or deodorant, you can use them as well as spraying the fragrance. You can also apply the lotion or powder form of the fragrance before spraying the fragrance. The layering effect allows the smell of the fragrance to remain consistent and subtle without being too loud or strong. It produces a soft scent and enhances your natural body scent.

Something Personal: A Little Off Topic

Dear Readers and Viewers,

I first want to thank you all for supporting fragranceman.com. I hope you've learned something new from each article that I've post. Well, I want to share a piece of great personal news with you. Before I tell you this information, let me give you the background.

As I was posting religiously on the blog, I was dealing with many personal struggles. I was forced to close my online retail shop, lost my father and my dear young cousin, lost two properties and began to experience extreme financial difficulty. Luckily, I was able to find a decent paying job to help my finances, but it did not take full advantage of my abilities. Therefore, I was very unsatisfied with this working experience. Overall, I felt my life was going nowhere.

Before I'd experienced these challenges, my life was better overall. I had a great career as a librarian; I was making good money; my finances were stellar; I lived in a cute house; and I was surrounded by loving family and friends. I must admit that my life wasn't perfect. I was experiencing many problems with my partner, who I later left.

Now you know the background of my good news. So, let me tell you it. I recently have been hired as a librarian again! And, this opportunity is very exciting for me personally and professionally. I feel as if I've won the lottery. I can tell you that I've been waiting for news like this for a long time.

Take care,

Lawrence "Larry" aka "The Fragrance Man"

Reprint and Fragrance Education: Counterfeits

Protect Yourself - Spotting Fake And Counterfeit Perfumes

By Micheal Rares

I recently began selling to the retail market after being a Perfume Wholesale Distributor in the Discount Perfume industry for over 28 years. I started selling on eBay and soon noticed some items from my competitors had substantially lower pricing than I could purchase from perfume distributors and the fragrance manufactures. I came across an item by Chanel that caught my eye. This is a company that has strict distribution and limits its supply to all of its distribution channels.

Coco Mademoiselle Eau de Parfum Spray 3.4oz, which retails for $110.00, was on eBay for $39.95. This item, when it is available, sells in the wholesale market for around $85.00. As a consumer, this should immediately put up a red flag as it did for me that this product was either counterfeit or stolen. Based on the price I ruled out stolen merchandise. There is no need to cut the price of perfumes this low. In fact, you can sell perfumes close to or at market price.

The first clue in determining if a product is real is the pricing. If it is too good to be true, it usually is. To further my research, I purchased the Coco Mademoiselle. At first glance it looked real but then I closely examined the details of the packaging and components against one I purchased from a distributor for Chanel. There were obvious differences between the products.

Here are some things to look for that will let you spot counterfeit perfume. You can do this by comparing the item in question against one from a department store.

1. Examine the outside packaging. Is the lettering the same font and type?

2. Is the wording on the box in the same place?

3. Is the box folded and glued in the same manner? Is the seam even and properly connected? Does it fall apart when handled?

4. The detail bordering need to be the same. In the Coco Perfume case there is a gold trim around the outside of the box and the inside flaps are gold.

5. The UPC Bar code on the box should be in the same place. Do the numbers match up?

6. Are the trademarks present and in the right places?

7. Is there an inner lining inside the box and is the construction consistent with the perfume box you are comparing with?

8. Look at the details, angles and coloring of the cap and its construction. Does it fit properly on the bottle? Does it slide on and off easily.

9. The bottle construction is very difficult to copy. Are the angles of the glass smooth and even? Quality bottles are seamless.

10. Check the clarity of the color and print work on the bottle.

11. Another good indicator is the sprayer. Examine the sprayer detail outside and inside the bottle. In this case the gold sprayer and the stem inside it were completely different.

12. Finally, see if the coloring of the juice and the smell are consistent with the department store product. The smell test is always the first test for consumers, but it can be hard to tell the difference unless you wear it for a period of time.

I concluded with my 28 years plus in the business that this Chanel Perfume product was counterfeit. I read the consumer reviews. 50% thought something was wrong, while the other half were deceived by this counterfeit product. I reported the counterfeit perfume to eBay. They did not adequately respond nor did they penalize the company selling the counterfeit products. It is buyer beware when buying from eBay.

Consumers should look for reputable websites that have good ratings and guarantee their Discount Perfume products. Price comparison using legitimate websites when purchasing any product is a good rule of thumb. If the product price is not relatively within the market price, stay away from it.

Ad of the Week: Man by Calvin Klein

Smalto by Francesco Smalto - A Revised Review

The house of Francesco Smalto describes its namesake as "subtle and original." It also states that Smalto resembles a fine garment. "It imitates beautiful fabrics, mixing classicism with modernism... The thread which holds the shape [of the fragrance] is hand-made from woodfern with the light scent of cypress, making it at the same time contemporary and timeless," according to Smalto's site.

By reading the official description of Smalto, I assumed that it would meet my usual expectations of prestige fragrances. In other words, its scent would be on the same level as Fendi's Theorema, Sean Jean's Unforgivable, Calvin Klein's Man or Tom Ford for men, which were (and still are) all gentlemanly and complex. However, when I first sniffed it, it did not meet my expectations. To be frank, I thought this fragrance stank!

I know my original conclusion about Smalto is a bit harsh, and it may be only true for people who are fragrance elitists like me. So, my conclusion may be way off for many fans of this fragrance. So, why does Smalto have fans? I can only hypothesize that it represents very masculine men -- rugged and uncomplicated -- for many of its fans. It does remind me of some fragrances that my father has worn -- the classic scents of hardworking men. It is probably popular among working class men, such as construction workers, plumbers, delivery drivers, etc.

Hardworking men will appreciate its fragrances notes. They give it a rustic scent. Smalto begins with lavender, clary sage, bergamot and petitgrain. Its middle notes are geranium, rose, heliotrope and carnation. It finally dries down to oakmoss, tonka, hay and vanilla.

So, why did I give Smalto a negative assessment? I have to admit that this fragrance smells badly on me. Its hints of aromatic, citrus, floral and woody notes don't mix well with my body chemistry. This is a good lesson for me and all fragrance lovers. As many perfume experts have stated, a scent may smell terrific on some people while it may smell horrible on others. However, the main reason why I don't like this fragrance because it lacks complexity and refinery. In other words, I find it to be too generic.

I know many fans of this fragrance will disagree with my thoughts about this cologne. So, I feel compelled to make a recommendation for its fans. I recommend this fragrance for men who prefer simple and rugged colognes. Smalto by Francesco Smalto can be found at many online perfumeries.
