The Report: Weekly Highlights of the Fragrance World: July 12 - July 18, 2009

Michael Jackson's fragrance secret has just been revealed, and rapper Nelly will launch a new perfume in September. Jean Paul Gaultier’s Ma Dame first year anniversary will be celebrated. Finally, established perfume houses Elizabeth Arden, Narciso Rodriguez, Prada and Thierry Mugler will create new fragrances.

  • According to UK tabloid The Sun, Michael Jackson planned to launch two fragrances 19 years ago. These scents were called Mystique de Michael Jackson for women and Le Jan de Michael Jackson for men. The plan to release them were dropped when he was accused of child molestation in 1993. Approximately 400,000 bottles of these fragrances were destroyed. Entertainment manager Neil London, who is based in Florida, kept a few dozen bottles of the scents. He plans to sell them but admits they have turned putrid.
  • Elizabeth Arden will update 5th Avenue with a new version called 5th Avenue Style. This new perfume is for the woman who has her own style. The "fruity-floral-oriental juice" will be available in September.
  • Narciso Rodriguez with Beauté Prestige International will launch a new fragrance line, the Musc Collection, in September. This line is a tribute to musk.
  • Nelly with Romane Fragrances will release Apple Bottoms in September. This fragrance is inspired by Nelly's apparel line for women.
  • Prada will launch a new fragrance in the fall called L’Eau Ambrée. The new perfume begins with Sicilian citrus; its heart is may rose and it ends with patchouli, vanilla and opoponax. According to WWD, the juice's bottle "is done in gradated shades of gray and black with the Prada logo embossed in gold; a gold-toned plate and neck are topped by a black atomizer."
  • Thierry Mugler has just launched A*Men Pure Malt. The main notes in this fragrance are pure malt CO² extract, coffee absolute, cedarwood and patchouli. It sells for $70 for a 3.4 oz bottle.
  • To celebrate the first anniversary of Jean Paul Gaultier’s Ma Dame, two Rose’N’Roll limited editions have been created. According to the Moodie Report, "The first limited edition is a 75ml edt (priced at €60), upsized like a retro LP, according to the brand, in line with the fragrance’s pop rock music concept. Sporting stylised offbeat graphics, the packaging is designed to evoke concert posters. The second limited edition is a 50ml edt (€50), which is presented in a white neoprene pouch finished with fluorescent pink stitching. Described as a “nomadic accessory”, the pouch can also be used to carry an MP3 player."
