Bond No. 9 Raffle -- FYI

Announcing Bond-No. 9-Significant-Mother’s-Day-Raffle: The prize? A nonstop one-year supply of eau de parfum. Disappointed non-winners can buy a subscription.

During the week preceding Mother’s Day (May 10th), Bond No. 9 aficionados are invited to sign up their favorite mother for a unique Mother’s Day raffle gift: a year’s supply of Bond No. 9. This means one bottle per month of the eau de parfum of her choice.

The rules are pretty lenient here. Any Bond No. 9 customer is welcome to enter our raffle—no purchase necessary. All they need to do is stop at any of our counters, at our own stores or at Saks Fifth Avenue, Sunday, May 3rd - Saturday, May 9th. There they supply their name and contact information on a raffle to be left in a hatbox. At the close of business on the 9th, the winning raffle at each store will be drawn at random and the winner informed that evening—just in time for Mother’s Day.

Who qualifies as an eligible mother? The regular, old-fashioned, all-forgiving, chicken-soup mother, to be sure. But also the career mother, the vamp mother, the shopaholic mother … any female on whom we’d ordinarily bestow a Mother’s Day gift. And hey, self-satisfying types are welcome to enter their own name. (We do not judge.)

This eau de parfum prize is no ordinary Mother’s Day present. It’s a sense-delighting gift that keeps on giving—like a magazine subscription (but without the annoying renewal notices). In fact, we have a limited-time special offer for our non-winners: The same monthly supply of gift-boxed Bond No. 9 sent to the recipient of their choice at a discount of twelve bottles for the price of ten.

Enter to win at any of the four Bond No. 9 boutiques in New York City:
9 Bond Street * 680 Madison Avenue * 897 Madison Avenue *
399 Bleecker Street and nationwide at Saks Fifth Avenue

Tour Delayed and Other News

Dear Readers,

Due to my very, very tight schedule, our tour of the Forum Shops will be delayed until tomorrow or Sunday evening. As some of you may know, I'm a graduate student, and my second semester is ending in a couple of weeks. In other words, I'll become a very studious zombie during the next two weeks. Also, since I will have a heavy workload, my posts for this week, and maybe next week, will emphasize fragrance ads. This type of post takes less time to create. So, I will declare this upcoming week to be "Fragrance Ad Week" for Fragranceman.com, which will began this Monday. We will view videos of classic and new fragrances. I hope you all will enjoy them. Finally, working 40 hours a week, going to school almost full time and writing the blog can be very challenging for me. But, my life would be less richer if I didn't do these things. Thank you in advance for being very understanding.

Hugs and kisses,

The Fragrance Man

Laila by Geir Ness: An Original Review

When I was in San Francisco a few weeks ago, I visited a hip pub called Martuni's. It was a piano and martini bar with a handsome “old school” interior – dark woods, low lighting, velvety walls and very intimate. As a friend and I were sipping our fruity-flavored martinis and conversing about our lives, a beautiful Latina woman approached us. We met her earlier that evening. A few minutes later, a discussion about fragrances consumed us. She mentioned that some scents bother her since they did not match her body type. She was mainly attracted to clean scents. After this pleasurable conversation, I wondered which fragrance would be best for her. Then, I suddenly thought of it. The perfect perfume for this woman would be Laila by Geir Ness.

The origins of Laila began when Mr. Ness was a fragrance model. As he was modeling, he was frequently asked if there was a fragrance inspired by his homeland, Norway. This inspired him to create one. According to Laila.com, “In time, Geir found a perfumer who advised him to begin his search by finding ingredients he liked. Of course, Norwegian wildflowers were the first thing that came to mind. He remembered that wonderful childhood experience when he would go to the mountains. He gathered flowers and herbs and brought them to the perfumer to create an oil that captured their true scent.” After his research and some marketing tests, Laila, the essence of Norway, was launched.

“An exhilarating blend of natural oils, Laila is an infusion of Norwegian mountain wildflowers with just a touch of fruit inflections including watermelon. With no synthetic additives, it mixes with the skin's own oils to remain fresh all day without turning or fading,” according to the perfumer's web site. Laila, which is named after Geir Ness's mother, is a fresh floral that features wild flowers with hints of watermelon.

So, what are my true thoughts about Mr. Ness's perfume? The first word that comes into my mind about this fragrance is fresh. This fragrance reminds me of fresh clean air that is lightly perfumed by a sea of delicate fragrant flowers. As matter of fact, I let the scent dried on a perfume testing paper for about a couple of weeks. I recently sniffed the test paper, and it still smelled very fresh and clean. Of course, I was amazed by this trait. It is the perfect day time fragrance for spring or summer. Ladies, if you like a clean floral scent, I highly recommend that you add Laila to your fragrance wardrobe.

Laila is available as a 1.7 oz Eau de Parfum Spray for $53.00 and a 3.4. oz Eau de Parfum Spray for $73.00. Its collection also includes a Boldspecial-edition 1.7 oz Pure Parfum Spray for $95.00. If you purchase this edition, 10% of the retail price will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. This organization funds breast cancer research. It is helping to find a cure for this devastating disease.

Laila by Geir Ness can be purchased at laila.com, Nordstrom and fine online perfumeries.

Flora by Gucci

Gucci has just released its newest fragrance for women, Flora. This perfume symbolizes Gucci's heritage, the Flora pattern. According to Martha Kepner of Examiner.com, Flora by Gucci's "top notes are lush mandarin citrus and peony, which then give way to the core of the fragrance: powdery rose and exotic osmanthus, a flower prized in Asia for an almost leathery, velvety nose. Finally, sandalwood, pink pepper and patchouli balance out the sweetness with a spicy base note, leaving behind a veil of scent . . . ."

The commercial for Flora stars Australian model, Abbey Lee Kershaw, and it was directed by Chris Cunningham. It is a "Donna Summer's classic 'I Feel Love'," according to Catwalk Queen.

According to JR Rapheal, the article's author, "Pon farr, for anyone not up on Star Trek trivia, is apparently a Vulcan mating ritual first mentioned in the 1967 TV episode 'Amok Time.' It's a 'heat' of sorts that Vulcan men experience once every seven years. In plainer terms, they start going bonkers and don't stop until they score with a special ladyfriend."

Pon Farr is described as "refreshing" and "both invigorating and dramatic." Its main notes are citrus, blackcurrant, lotus blossom, water lily, sandalwood, peach and mulberry. It is expected to be launched next month. It will retail for $30 per bottle.

Eternity Summer -- FYI

Calvin Klein has just launched the 2009 edition of Eternity Summer for men and women. According to Osmoz.com, "this limited-edition duo was inspired by the romanticism and beauty of beautiful summer days . . . ." Mentioned by Ultrafragrances.com, an online retailer, the women's scent is a floral while the male version is an aromatic fragrance. The primary notes for Eternity Summer for women are litchi, pear blossom, Chinese ginger, Heart of Gold Mimosa, pink freesia, magnolia, musk, tonka and white cedar. Eternity Summer for men is composed of gin, lime, bergamot, pepper, basil, chamomile, Hinoki wood, Star anise and amber notes. These fragrances are currently available at fine department stores and online perfumeries.

Eau de Chypre: Fragrance Recipe from The Art Of Perfumery

This is an old-fashioned French perfume, presumed to be derived from the Cyperus esculentus by some, and by others to be so named after the Island of Cyprus; the article sold, however, is made thus—

Extract of musk,
1 pint.
" ambergris,}
" vanilla,} of each,1/2 "
" tonquin bean,}
" orris,}
Esprit de rose triple,
2 pints.

The mixture thus formed is one of the most lasting odors that can be made.
