Holy Smoke by Demeter: A Short Review

The smells of old Catholic churches always make my eyes teary. Those scents remind me of my childhood religious rituals: first communion, first confession and confirmation. They also bring up scents of my childhood church -- old dark woods, musty, floral, burning candles, incense and crowds of ethnic folks. When I first smelled Holy Smoke by Demeter, those same feelings suddenly arose in me; I felt that I was in my old church.

Even though Holy Smoke can evoke very powerful sacred memories, this fragrance is not meant to be used daily. In fact, I believe for most people, including myself, this fragrance is just too niche to wear. If you want to wear it for a sacred ceremony or want to feel "holier-than-thou," it is the perfect scent. If you wear it at the office or at a party, you will get strange looks from your officemates and fellow partygoers. I personally used the fragrance as an air freshener. It seems to exorcise demonic smells, such as nasty bathroom scents, from my home.

Since Demeter is known to use very few notes in its fragrances, it makes sense that the the only notes in Holy Smoke are incense and smoke. It is available as a 1 oz spray for $20.00 and a 3.4 oz spray for $39.50. It is also available in other bottle sizes, as a room refresher and as body products. It can be bought on
Demeterfragrance.com, perfume boutiques and online perfumeries. I highly recommend this fragrance for individuals who love the smell of old Catholic churches or who love to collect fun and niche fragrances.

The commercial for this line stars Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova, Naomi Campbell, Fernando Fernandes, Noah Mills and Tyson Ballou. It's background music is Freedom by George Michael.

Lulabie's Teddy Bear -- FYI

As a passionate fragrance lover and a former youth services librarian, I highly recommend Lulabie's aromatherapy teddy bears. Children will love them since they are cute and smell well, and parents will appreciate them since these special bears will encourage their children to sleep. There is also a great book included with each bear. For more details, read the press release below.

The first long lasting scented sleep well aromatherapy teddy bear

September 2009

Did you know that a baby typically results in 400-750 hours of lost sleep for parents in the first year? With every breath we take, we smell what is around us. If you think about it, we breathe 26,000 times a day. Our sense of smell impacts our lives 24 hours a day since our birth since it is the most developed sense when we are born. A baby recognizes his mother due to the smell of her breast milk.

Lulabie® is a new brand that puts forward the importance of including family rituals in their daily routines for their children’s emotional balance and well being. An association is always made between scented aromatherapy plush with different educational and developmental toys.

Our first collection is the Lulabie® aromatherapy teddy bears which is associated to the “sleep well” ritual from birth on. The Lulabie® teddy bear gift sets include a scented teddy bear which contains our “sleep well” aromatherapy formula, a short bed time story that tells the story of Lulabie Land and its animals to read to your child before he goes to sleep, and a relaxing music CD.

The Lulabie® brand was born out of requests from the founder’s (Sabrina Polakoff) family and friends to develop an aromatherapy blend that would help calm and relax their children and themselves. Having children that are a bit older, Sabrina knew that to have a good night of sleep was the most precious gift any parent could have. From this came the development of the Lulabie® aromatherapy blend and its unanimous approval gave birth to Lulabie Land. It not only had a 100% approval rate in terms of the aromatherapy sleep well formula but it started a whole new sleeping ritual for children and adults alike.

The word Lulabie® comes from the English word “Lullaby” which means a soothing song usually sung to children before they go to sleep. The most famous lullaby is Brahm’s Lullaby which you can hear on our www.Lulabie.com website as well as on the Lulabie® music CD.

The Lulabie® “sleep well” formula is a blend of aromatherapy and includes:

100% pure lavender oil to help you calm and relax
Orange to calm down
Thyme to revive the soul
Cardamom to release fatigue and stress

Our patent pending scented technology allows for a slow and constant release of the fragrance allowing you to enjoy the aromatherapy scent for months. It is a made from plant based plastic which in itself is very innovative and environmentally friendly.

Several studies have shown that it is important for a child to have daily routines in their life for his emotional balance and well being. One of the most important rituals is sleeping.

Recommended Lulabie® sleeping ritual:

- Give 15 minutes of your time to put your child to sleep. It is important that you are completely shut from the outside world during those 15 minutes so that you are not interrupted.
- Put your baby in his bed with his Lulabie® bear in his arms or in his bed close to him
- Read the bed time story “Welcome to Lulabie Land” and show him that his bear is featured in the story so that he feels like he is part of the story.
- Play the Lulabie® music CD at the same time so that everyone can relax and enjoy this ritual.
- Check that your child’s room is at a cool temperature (between 64° and 68°F / 18° to 20°C) and that the room is dark.

Welcome to Lulabie Land.

Lulabie Land is in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle. The bears live together in harmony with nature. The Lulabies live a peaceful and honest life, full of joy and happiness and have a huge respect for basic values: Love, Respect, Peace, Trust, and Honesty.

Each bear in Lulabie Land has his role and color

- Rubie is the king of the island and is beige. This traditional color evokes safety, simplicity and comfort.
- Rhodie is the teacher of the island and is pink. Young girls’ favorite color. It evokes health & love. It has a mentally and physically relaxing effect and brings harmony to the mind. Helps alleviate nervousness and anxiety.
- Saffie is the sportsman of the island and is blue. Blue is the favorite color in the world. It evokes rest and can cause the body to produce chemicals that are calming. Calming, sedate, cooling and helps stimulate intuition.
- Selie is the farmer of Lulabie Land and is brown. This classic color evokes stability, dependability and friendship.

Lulabie® teddy bears are targeted at children from their birth on. Their quality is amazing and they are made from very soft plush fabric. They have passed all the strictest children testings and are therefore very safe. Each gift set is packaged in its unique packaging allowing each of you to benefit from a plush that has not been touched by anyone. This is very important so that your child doesn’t catch any unwanted bacteria.

Lulabie® is the proud winner of the prestigious 2009 Jury’s Award for Toy of the Year in Belgium.

Tiare Parfum by Ormonde Jayne -- FYI

One of my favorite perfume houses, Ormonde Jayne, will introduce Tiare in October. According to an email that I have received from Ormonde Jayne, the creation of this fragrance was delayed. "When perfumer Linda Pilkington came to place the order for Absolute Tiare oil she assumed that delivery would take 3 weeks. When Linda phoned Tahiti to find out why she hadn’t received her oil yet, she learnt that the flowers were not yet picked! Tiare Absolute Oil is exceptionally rare & extremely expensive so the Tiare flowers are only actually picked once the order has been placed. After picking, the oil is then extracted, sent to USA for refinement and then on to France for further processing. Only after crossing all these oceans, does it reach the Ormonde Jayne studio in London, where it is compounded with the other ingredients, left to mature & then, finally poured. Once you smell Ormonde Jayne Tiare , I am sure you will appreciate every step of this process for it is truly magnificent." If this fragrance smells just as good as Zizan and Ormonde Jayne for Men, I'm sure this perfume for women will be a hit. For more information, read the press release below.

TIARE

TIARE (the emblem of Tahiti and pronounced tee –a- ray)

Like precious jewels resting on dark green foliage, the unsurpassed beauty of the Tiare flower is hand picked whilst still unopened and laid in oil for 15 days to extract the fragrance.
Like the woman who wears Tiare, this is a perfume that totally ignores seasons and the time of day, a perfume so artfully blended and infinitely refined... but with a dash of scintillating appeal.

Notes:

Top: Mandarin, Orange Flower and Sicilian Lime

Heart: Tiare, Freesia, Water Lilies, Jasmine, Orris and Ylang

Base: Cedar, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Moss and Musk

Linda Pilkington, creator and owner:

“From the moment I first encountered Tiare, the search was on to find the purest oil extraction. Tiare is a flower that doesn’t give up its secrets easily and it took many different incarnations, finding a subtle progression from citrus to flower, before I felt that we had an exceptional perfume”.

American Line -- FYI

California-based Parfumologie has launched a new fragrance line dedicated to American troops. Called American Line, proceeds from the sales of this collection will be donated to the U.S. Veterans Administration. For more information, read the press release below.

Parfumologie launches The American Line™ in Summer, 2009.

Los Angeles, July 23, 2009: In an effort to create revenue streams to fund donations, Parfumologie has created officially licensed designer fragrances for the men of the United States Military.

Concept. The original concept of The American Line™ was created in 2008 and explored heavily during the last 18 months. Parfumologie met face to face with dozens of active soldiers and retired veterans and asked their opinion on the creation of this item. Being sensitive to the feelings of the men and women that the item represented was a top priority.

From these meetings, Parfumologie learned that the idea had strong appeal, as long as it was carried out correctly. Colors and emblems are highly symbolic and are given great importance in the design.

Broad Appeal. Millions of family members, friends and admirers of the servicemen and women would be open to purchasing the items as gifts or self use. The five distinctive scents were carefully chosen and are proven winners.

Donations. The success of the products will create a huge opportunity for The American Line™ to donate to each of the five Branches of Service in addition to the American Veterans Administration. Giving back to the Men and Women that have bravely served our country is a high priority.

Website. TheAmericanLine.Org is now up and running and has started selling products online. Suggested retail for the products is $45.00. Initial sales have been pleasantly strong.

Product Extensions. Parfumologie’s current project is the next logical step: A women’s line of fragrances. Product extensions will include gift sets, aftershaves, lotions, sunscreens, lip balms, etc.

New Fragrances Added to My Wardrobe

If you haven't already guessed, every fragrance that I review I personally own. So, I'm always adding new fragrances to my scented arsenal. If you want to know which colognes that I've recently added to my fragrance wardrobe, read the list below.

Black Orchid by Tom Ford
My thoughts: I originally planned to purchase Surge Luten's newest scent, but I changed my mind after sniffing Black Orchid again. When I first smelled it, I thought it was too exotic for me to wear. I'm now in love with it.

Ecko by Marc Ecko
My thoughts: Ecko is a good fragrance to wear for clubbing. As I mentioned in my review of it, it is very youthful and sophisticated at the same time.

Gucci by Gucci pour Homme
My thoughts: What more can I say about Gucci by Gucci? It defines luxe fragrances. I think it may become a classic.

Ormonde Man by Ormonde Jayne
My thoughts: Ormonde Man is exotic and beautiful. When I wear this cologne, I do receive many compliments. It is just fabulous.

Zizan by Ormonde Jayne
My thoughts: Zizan has a more citrus feel than Ormonde Jayne. I usually do not like citrus-based fragrances, but I will have to make an exception for this one. I believe its Vetiver based makes it alluring, which helps to balance its citrus beginning. I love it, and it makes me feel very sexy.

L'Air du Temps Perfume Commercial 1982

Do you remember L'Air du Temps in the 1980s? Well, I remembered seeing this old girl in a Macy's ad during the height of the Reagan era. If you were a woman of taste during that time, this perfume was a must have.

So, what's in it? L'Air du Temps, which came out to the market in 1948, is a spicy-floral, and it begins with bergamot, rosewood and carnation. Its heart is rose, jasmine, violet and orris and dries down to cedarwood, sandalwood, musk and amber. It is available in fine department stores, mass retailers and online perfumeries. Enjoy the classic video!
